Advanced learner loan affect benefits? was created by Raw
Hi, would an advanced learner loan for an access to higher education course affect any of my benefits (ESA support group, PIP both enhanced, housing benefit)? Would I have to inform the DWP? Or would they know anyway as I would have to give Student Finance England my NI number to be able to apply? It is delivered entirely online twice a week for a full day (9:30 - 5pm). Thank you!

Hi Raw,
I personally don't know the answer to your query. However maybe someone else on the forum will be able to help?
With apologies.

Hi Raw
It won't affect your PIP but it could affect your ESA depending on the type of ESA you are claiming and it could affect your HB.
You need to contact either your local authority and ask or contact National Union of Students www.nus.org.uk

Hi Gary,
thank you. Called DWP. As the loan is directly paid to the college it won't be classed as income. Was also told that up to 16 hours are permitted. Is this correct in your opinion? Thank you!

Hi Raw
If you are on a course of non-advanced further education in England or Wales, it is full time if it involves more than 16 hours of guided learning a week.
You are not excluded from housing benefit if you:
~ get IR ESA, IS, or IB JSA as a full time student
~ have ( or are treated as having) a limited capability for work under ESA rules for a continuous period of 28 weeks
~ qualify for a disability premium or severe disability premium
other conditions apply see Disability Rights Handbook edition 46, page 201
If you need any further advice then I suggest that you contact The Student Union
