Hi Carebear39
Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is
Welcome to Benefits and Work
In answer to your question, it usually takes about 5 weeks to get back payment, if it is for a very large amount then they may pay by instalments usually 2 - 3.

Hi Carebear39,
Welcome to B&W!
What brilliant news as a first post!
It usually takes a week or two to get backdated payments once the decision notice arrives. Any longer and I would chase DWP.
You should get payments backdated to the start of your pip claim. If you are on income based ESA, and have at least standard rate daily living then you may be able to claim SDP which is extra amount of money. Provided you live alone (ie with no other adults) and no one gets Carer's allowance for looking after you, you can claim. You can also claim if you live with a partner and he/she also has daily living PIP and no carer.
Alternatively, if someone does care for you (or someone will) they can claim Carer’s Allowance. They will need to care fir you for at least 35hrs per week, and if they work earn no more than £128 per week. If you have had someone caring from or after the start of your PIP claim and the above criteria is met, they can claim, which will be backdated to the date of care start or PIP claim as appropriate.
If you can claim SDP, then this will also apply to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction too.
Again well done for successful claim.

And I always chip in Carebear39, in case, if someone cares for you for 20+ hours per week but doesn't get any national Insurance paid of their own because they are not working/not on means tested benefit, they can do a very simple declaration and at least get NI Carer's Credit towards a full State pension of their own. This seems to be the least-heard-of benefit of all. It does not pay out any cash, but simply not knowing straight away I could claim it is going to cost me a grand to put right if I do it. And my sister who looked after Mum before she found out she could claim is even worse off.
Best wishes,
Denby
