Advice required please for Washing and bathing

Hello

I would like a little advice please. The person who I care for and am helping to apply for pip has problems with washing and bathing. The reason for this is he tries to avoid doing this activity because he is either to fatigued to have a bath or is in to much pain and the activity of having a bath causes him pain and this is due to spinal deformity and fractures. He only has a bath once every 7 to 10 days.

What descriptor would apply to that situation?
Would it be 4c or even 4g under the "relaibly" regulation?

Thank you kindly in advance for your advice.

Hello Waxwing, and well done for stepping up and helping your friend with this horrible process.

It is hard for us to give accurate guidance as to which descriptor applies without the full picture. Having said that, for 4c to apply the person has to be able to wash or bathe themselves, just needing supervision or prompting to do so. People with depression very often get 4c because they need to be encouraged to wash; people who could not hear a fire alarm when they have their hearing aids removed also qualify for 4c.

4g means that they cannot - remembering as you correctly say the relaibility rules - wash themselves. With what you have told us about your friend (subject to the caveat above) I think they may well fall into the 4g descriptor.

Thank you Catherine for your reply.

I did not go into to much detail about him because I did not want anyone knowing to much about his condition as he like to keep things private as he can be a little paranoid about who is reading things on forums.

You are correct that the application for pip can be a horrible process as we spent 2 years trying to apply the first time only to find out he was not eligible after a tribunal. This we put down to him not filling the pip2 form correctly and not giving detail on why he did not meet the requirements according to the descriptors. That two years made use realise that we made a mistake and we have learned so much since then. So you can learn from your mistakes. Now we just need to put that new found knowledge and the knowledge here with help you your guides into practice with a new PIP claim.

We are taking it slowly and taking it in our own time to get all of the information together BEFORE we start with the new claim that means we are not rushing things and we are not making mistakes.

Thanks again.
Waxwing.

Hi waxwing. I would think he would get 3 points: inability to get in (and out) of a bath unaided. Unless he has a carer it is unlikely he’ll get any more than this x
Just my opinion obvs..
