GP unbelievably bad advice. Please help was created by Anxious Anonymous
I suffer with depression, severe anxiety, functional seizures and have recently been diagnosed with ADHD and have high clinical suspicion from 3 psychiatrists that I require an autism assessment.
I am under a mental health team and maybe getting a CPN. I’m also likely to be prescribed lithium soon to stabilise my moods.
My GP today insisted on seeing me in person and due to my severe anxiety around leaving the home, I have to have a companion at all times.
His attitude to my health condition was: find a part-time job?! Okay how? I can’t leave the house by myself and if I’m out too long I get fearful and want to come back.
Secondly, he said well you’ve turned up today. Yes I’m aware of that but enduring the severe anxiety in the presence of a companion. Without that companion, I don’t attend the surgery. I needed calming down to go and visit the GP.
Anyway, if this is his opinion, does that mean my LCWRA is now invalid because he thinks I should look for a part-time job?
And yet this is the same GP surgery my friend attends and her Mum has been provided with letters etc about her condition and yet she can drive from Manchester to Leeds.
I am banned from driving because of my seizures.
I am unable to travel alone.
And yet I’m being told this unbelievably bad advice?
So if I try a job, fail, fall flat on my back side and make my condition worse. I then have no money which then increases my suicidal thoughts which btw the psychiatrist noted that I suffer with ‘chronic suicidal feelings’ and moderate risk of ‘self-harm’.
But yeah just go get a job hey. I am absolutely flabbergasted.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi AnxiousAnonymous
I realise that this has caused you a great deal of distress, but the GP was simply offering his professional opinion, and you don't have to agree with it. If you suddenly find yourself having an ESA review and you need to provide up-to-date information of your medical condition/s, you can get corroboration of your difficulties from a psychiatrist and your future CPN who will have a greater understanding of your difficulties. You only need to inform the DWP of a change in your condition if there has been an improvement. From what you say - there hasn't been - so there's nothing to report. Try not to worry about it.

Thanks BIS
The trouble is that this particular GP doesn’t understand panic disorder, social phobia and agoraphobia. My GP surgery is a short distance and my partner insisted we go because my risk was getting higher.
The senior mental health nurse I see has stopped asking me to come see him in person because he knows it’s causing panic and severe anxiety.
I’m very upset and worried that this could lead to me getting in trouble. I require the presence of a companion to leave the house every time I leave the house because of panic, phobias and seizures.
This is also the same for PIP where I score 1E because I don’t leave the house for the majority of days. And ESA
