ESA & CARERS ALLOWANCE was created by alfwithair58
Hi

Just renewed my membership as need some advice

My wife currently gets ESA with the Support Group element and the enhanced disability premium.
It's claimed as a couple and is also in receipt of both elements of PIP at the enhanced rate.

I am her carer and have been for years, but don't actually claim carers allowance as told by an adviser many years back that it would be taken off our ESA payment, so no point.

However, I have since been told that although the carers allowance amount would still be deducted from our ESA, we would get a carers premium added, so would be about £42 a week better off.

I don't seem to be able to find a definitive answer, so am unsure whether to put in a claim for CA or not.

Can anybody clarify which is the correct information.

Hi alfwithair58

As you have a joint claim for IR ESA any claim for Carers Allowance (£76.75) will be deducted £ for £ from your ESA but you will be entitled to a carers premium so you will be £42.75 a week better off.

Thank you for your reply clarifying the situation.
I will certainly submit a carers allowance claim ASAP.

We must have lost out on 1000s£ over the years due to bad advice from our council benefits adviser .

Do you know if it paid from the date of award or date of application?

Hi alfwithair58

If you were entitled to crersallowance before claiming, you can ask for it to be backdated for up to three months.

Depending on your circumstances it can in some cases be backdated further, unfortunately in your case this does not apply.

Thanks again for your help
Suppose 3 months is better than nothing.
Don't suppose the carer premium on the ESA is backdated too?

Hi alfwithair58

ESA would also be backdated but going back three months will also create an overpayment, remember what you get in one hand is taken away from the other. You should be £42.75 a week better off going back 3 months approx (£555)
