I’m currently in receipt of DLA, lower rate care. I’ve recently applied for PIP as I hope/believe I’ll be better off due to worsening and new conditions. My understanding is that in these circumstances PIP, if awarded, will not be backdated to claim date, only from date of decision. Whether I’m successful or not I’m aware DLA will cease from date of PIP decision and that this is a risk I have taken. Would I be better off cancelling my DLA claim now so that PIP is then backdated to date of application? IAS have received paperwork from DWP but an assessment and decision could still take months. If PIP is awarded I could lose out on a significant amount by keeping DLA claim open whereas if I’m unsuccessful I’ve only lost a few payments of the lesser amount of DLA.

Any PIP award will go into payment four weeks after a Decision on your claim is made, until then your DLA remain in payment.
If you have already applied for PIP then it may be too late as it will be treated as a transfer. You would need to cancel both the DLA and PIP claims and start again from scratch with the PIP but you need to be aware that there are long delays in the PIP assessment system and it is more than possible that a Decision could be significantly more than three months.
Also, be aware PIP is a fundamentally different benefit from DLA.
DLA looked at care needs whereas PIP looks at functional needs. DLA scored claimants down for using aids, PIP scores you higher and there are many more examples. See our PIP Claim guide for the criteria you will need to meet.
Your current DLA award does not have an equivalent in PIP so you are starting from scratch in showing your limitations.
