PIP Telephone Assessment at 65 was created by JD
Hello.
I had retired due to ill health (Fibromyalgia) and put in the support group around 5 years ago. I claimed PIP and was awarded the lower daily allowance amount.
I have a telephone renewal assessment booked for Tues 11July.
Over the last 4 years this has been extended without assessment. Which although I was initially happy with this (to avoid the stress)I feel now that during my 60’s no assessment just ongoing standard rate in living with no mobility was in place until I reached 65. Will any consideration be given that I tried to contact DWP with regard to further significant health changes?
I am now very worried that I may lose even the standard rate. I had tried to get in touch at various times regarding my worsening condition, but could not get through. After each attempted phone call, no answer, just a text to say
“We still have your PIP form and will be progressing your review as soon as we can. You may still need an assessment with a health professional. Your PIP will continue to be paid until we review your claim. You only need to contact us if your circumstances change”
Am I correct in that at age 65 you cannot be awarded an enhanced rate on daily living and mobility component?
Thank you for your consideration

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi JD
After 65 a claimant can't be given a mobility award if one is not already in place. If someone has a standard mobility award, it can't be increased to enhanced after 65.
I'm not quite sure what you mean when you ask consideration will be given to the fact that you tried to contact the DWP to say that your condition had worsened. If you didn't tell someone there has been a change of circumstances either by phone or by letter then you will have to rely on what you say on Tuesday. They can't take notice of something they were unaware of.
I hope it goes well for you.

JD
Just to clarify.
It is 65 or State Retirement Age, whichever is the higher.

Thank you for your reply.
I had my telephone review assessment today. Took just over an hour. I can’t say that I didn’t feel rushed throughout. I tried not to answer yes or no, but give full answers pertaining to my condition and how it affects me.
The questions bounced from section to section, it was difficult to remember sometimes, but I had prepared notes which helped.
I covertly recorded the interview for my own use. (I hope this was ok?) I think this will prove helpful should I need to appeal.
There were a few minor things I didn’t get around to saying, due to pressure put on me to answer. On the whole though it was ok.
I’m sure all members feel overwhelmed when describing their particular needs, I know I am!!
Hoping that award is renewed or even improved upon before I reach my retirement age next year at 66.
Thanks again for your help

Hi JD
Glad your assessment went well. It is perfectly okay to have made a covert recording - as you say, you might need it later. You can ring for a copy of the assessment report (PA4) 48 hours after it has taken place. If you ring and they say you have to wait until the decision letter comes out (which occasionally happens) tell them you can have it now and if they still refuse, hang up the phone and ring again. Different call handlers can give different information.
