I was told a fortnight ago that my cancer is terminal and all my treatment from now on is palliative. Do I need to tell the DWP? Will it make any difference to my benefits? I'm on ESA (support group) and PIP (higher rate) as I've already been ill for some time. I've got between a couple of months to maybe a year (it's hard to pin oncologists down, they don't like to commit!) Just not sure whether the DWP need to know or not. Thanks, Suki

I'm really sorry to hear of your news. That's hard for you and your loved ones.
When a person is diagnosed with a terminal illness, they can come under what is known as the 'special rules' - which in some cases may mean an increase in benefits, no medical assessments. To do this, an additional form would be needed. Regarding your benefits: PIP: If you're already receiving the enhanced rate for Daily Living - your recent diagnosis makes no difference.
ESA - You are already in the support group, so there is no change as far as I can see. However, check out what the site says to ensure you receive what you should.
I don't know when your PIP was next up for review, but you really don't want to be pestered with an assessment - so I think you would be wise to inform the DWP so you do not suddenly receive a form.
