Migration from ESA to UC and caring was created by smc
I am on IR ESA and have been for many years, am in WRAG. I recently received migration to UC letter.
In the last few years I have become a carer to my dad. I live with my parents due to my own health conditions, both my parents are in their 80s. Needless to say the effects of caring do take their toll on my health, not that I was able to work anyway. My dad has a carer every morning to do personal care but apart from that everything else is done by mum, myself and my sister who comes to help a few days most weeks.
I see on UC there is a carers element, is this different to carers allowance? Nobody claims carers allowance for my dad although he does get attendance allowance. Just curious how it all works as if I am asked questions about my own health caring affects it so I will be mentioning I am a carer as it affects my health. It is more about my health than the money, but feel it's best I get some understanding about it. Should I be claiming anything as a carer or just be stating I am a carer and how it affects my health.
Thanks!

Hi smc,
The conditions for getting Carer's Allowance and the UC Carer's Element are similar. There are differences with regard to National Insurance credits. So you really need to look at the issue in some depth. Here is the relevant guidance .....

Let me know how you get on.

Thank you, I will give that a read.
Just remembered, my ESA claim started prior to April 2017, I believe that gives you extra on UC, is that correct? Does that cause any issues?

Hi smc
If you were placed in the WRA group and received payment for that element, then you would be eligible for the LCW element under UC.

Thank you!
Does that continue if I tell them I am a carer?

Hi smc
It may raise a few questions.
You cannot claim both as an individual, LCW element = £156.11 pm, Carer Element = £198.31 pm.
