Hi Anneb,

Thanks for your feedback. I notice on the Lloyds Appointee website it states the following " Please note this type of access is suitable for customers who have lost mental capacity "

Hi David, I noticed the bank stated " Please note this type of access is suitable for customers who have lost mental capacity " but I took that as Lloyds not quite understanding the DWP's form BF57. Since I have form BF57 then surely the bank would accept that as it says on their website.

Normally when a person "lacks mental capacity" the Appointee needs Power of Attorney. If the bank won't accept my form BF57 I would plan to contact PIP, New Style ESA and Universal Credit and ask them if my son's benefits can be paid into his bank account. I have a friend who is Appointee for her son and has her son's benefits paid into his account - the DWP said it was unusual but nevertheless they agreed to do that.

If this isn't possible then it would be catastrophe for benefit claimants who have Appointees who die and who's bank accounts are therefore frozen. This situation must surely have already arisen for some.

Hi Anneb,

I expect there is a DWP procedure on the death of an appointee. It is something I will have to look into.
