PIP review, prescribed aid was created by Chocolady
Ive always filled these in setting out how I use a walking stick the majority of the time for my mobility issues due to lupus/arthritus in my knees and fibromyalgia plus a foot fracture. The new forms ask if you are using a “prescribed” aid to walk. I had crutches when I broke my foot and have used a walking stick before and since as a progression from the crutches but the prescribed bit throws me and can they deny you an award if the stick isnt strictly speaking prescribed?

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Chocolady
I would try not to overthink it. They are not just looking at a walking stick to decide the entire award. You have conditions where a stick is an obvious aid, and no one will think that is strange. You have been prescribed crutches, and now you walk with a stick. Ultimately, they look at the distance you can walk

Hi chocolady
Put whatever feels most comfortable. Put crutches and then explain you have moved onto a stick or put stick and say in the past you have been prescribed crutches but stick is currently more suitable.
I know you are scared of putting the 'wrong thing', and I understand why, but try not to put so much pressure on yourself to get it 'perfect' - because there is no such thing. All you can do is be honest and explain as best you can. There is huge element of luck in this process - in who is going to read your form and what interpretation they will put on it. Unfortunately, you have no control over that.
Whatever you decide to put for how soon you stop - do not overestimate it!.(Most people do and say they can actually walk further than they can) Believe me they will go straight for the longest time and say that's what you can always do. Same for how long you stop for - you can say it varies but be careful not to underplay it - if it's a bad issue for you - say so. And if you have a telephone assessment - look out for the assessor trying to catch you out on the timings - it's one of their favourite things. It's not as if anyone measures it!
