UC migration and appointments was created by Kel
Hi

I was in the support group for ESA but have been migrated over to universal credit. I was told I wouldn’t need to attend any appointments after verifying my identity. I’ve just been sent a message saying I’ve to attend an appointment for NS ESA CC. I believe this means new style ESA claimant commitment. I don’t know how to say I can’t attend because I’m disabled and rely on help if I’m fit enough to attend - which most of the time I’m not. I’m hoping someone on here can advise why I need to apply for new style ESA and how to respond to the job centre about not being able to attend meetings in person. Please can someone help me. The stress of this is actually making my illness worse.

Thanks
Kel

Hi Kel

This has happened to a number of Forum members but you can ask to have the interview for the claimant commitment over the phone. Your old Conts ESA becomes New Style ESA on Migration and this requires a claimant commitment. You can send the Work Coach a message in the UC Journal stating that you cannot travel to the Jobcentre.

Let me know how you get on.

David

Hi David

Thank you so much for your help. I’ve managed to get my appointment changed to a phone call. Can I just ask though what is a claimant commitment and also will I need to be reassessed to stay on the support group (or whatever the new equivalent is)?

Thanks

Kel

Hi Kel,

A claimant commitment is just something that you and your workcoach agree with - this could be walking for 20 minutes per day to maintain your mental health for example, or completing online courses, or updating your CV.

I'm not sure about the re-assessment however, I would've thought that you would be kept in the same equivalent after the migration, but best to liaise with your WC for certainty.

Chris.
