I have completed PIP forms for my adult daughter who lives alone with her 2 children, after getting out of an abusive relationship.
She has ADHD and undiagnosed autism - with anxiety and low mood.
Everyday is a struggle and she has huge support from me and my husband and her sisters to maintain her tenancy and look after the children. She works one morning a week when I arrive at her house early to get the children dressed and fed and look after then while she works.
She would never have been able to fill in the PIP form and thinking about/discussing her deficits and the reliance she had on her family is difficult for her to accept as she feels guilty and incompetent.
She has been invited for a video assessment and I will also need to attend as I just don’t think she’ll be able to answer any questions! She finds it hard to express any feelings and cannot communicate or even fully process the difficulties she has. Even questions about what help she needs from us leave her looking blank and unable to make a decision.
I submitted a detailed statement about what help she has from her family but don’t know what to expect from the assessment in terms of how much I will be able to answer for her.
I have a fear that she will just get overwhelmed and end the video call if she feels under pressure!!! I really don’t know what to expect. Any comments appreciated !

Hi Sarah Bee

How much you are able to say, will depend on the assessor. I recently did an assessment with someone and the assessor was happy for me to interrupt and add information - and contradict something the claimant said, and asked me at the end if I had anything else to say - but I was lucky. There are some assessors that try and ignore the support saying they want to hear from the claimant. If you can, try and establish at the beginning of the call how the assessor wants to manage the process - (They should say without being asked). You can tell them that you are concerned that your daughter can't always express things and you don't want anything missed out. I hope that you have asked for the assessment to be recorded and you should record the audio for yourselves if you can.

Hi Sarah Bee, besides BIS's wise words, please be ready to request the PA4 max 48 hours afterwards if necessary supporting your daughter to do so. I've managed to get our daughter's PA4s as a 'representative' not 'appointee'. If refused, just call again. Be ready to write in to 'The Decision Maker' asap with a careful destruction of anything wrong in the report when you get it.[never say 'lie'!]
