I read your latest newsletter with interest and concern, where it relates to the government’s proposals with regards to PIP assessment scoring.

You have rightly focused on the large number of claimants who currently receive higher rate PIP but who fail to meet the score of 4 or more on at least one daily living activity.

But maybe another consideration is this: what about those of us who do meet this threshold currently? I do not believe it is going to be that easy for us to pass any review, once the new rules come into effect.

I expeche DWP to make every effort to downgrade people so as to achieve what pre-determined savings targets they are given. So, the effort on all of us who do currently meet this threshold, and whose condition is unchanged, is to make jolly sure the assessors & DWP fully justify in writing any attempt to downgrade scores. That is, they will have to clearly show that someone’s condition has IMPROVED, so as to clearly justify any reduced score and entitlement; and for the claimant to thereby be able to challenge such assessments.

What do people think about this aspect of what seems likely to happen to those coming up for review after November 2026 who do score at least one 4?

Thank you.

Hi Augustus

As you said, nothing has been mentioned yet about what will happen to those who meet the threshold. Until they confirm the changes, nothing is clear, and there is little to be gained in speculating about what they might do. All it does is worry people. We currently have a lot of posts with people trying to fill in MRs or Appeals or dealing with migration from ESA to UC as well as many other immediate issues.

Your question is a legitimate concern, and I know you want to hear the views from other members, but right now, the moderators have to use their limited time answering immediate issues that members need help with. I'm publishing your post, but I'm also locking it, as I have done with several others recently. These types of questions, where we have no answer but promote discussion, are increasing the distress of some members and also require a lot of our time to moderate.

As the changes are confirmed, they will be reported in the newsletter. And hopefully in a few months we can devote more time to the what ifs.
