Hi Mary
The rules on free prescriptions are made by the NHS and are as follows regarding Universal Credit....
"While you're waiting on your Universal Credit decision -
Until your first assessment period is complete, Universal Credit doesn't entitle you to help with NHS costs.
If you need to pay for any NHS charges, for example, prescriptions or dental treatment, make sure you get a receipt and ask how you can claim a refund.
If you pay for a prescription, ask for a refund receipt called an FP57 when you pay - you can't get one later."
The NHS provide an online Help with Health Costs checker ( link below )

Hi David
I'm in a similar situation to Mary, will be fined £100 if I don't challenge by 20th July...then extra £50 after this date!
Was in the middle of Managed Migration, & had to get emergency dental treatment from my regular dentist.
Don't remember filling in the exemption form at all - i think the receptionist did it for me (I was in a lot of pain), & she must have ticked ir-ESA (which was my original benefit).
This was on 19th May, but my 1st UC payment didn't arrive until 30th May.
I wasn't in the usual UC assessment period, because I was covered (I thought) by the DWP Managed Migration process.... ie not a 'new' claim?
PLEASE HELP ADVISE ME IF YOU CAN
I'm very, very worried & scared.
Thank you so much x

Hi Lilakitten
We hear from a lot of members who get caught out, follow David's advice in previous post..
You can try and argue, especially if you had made a claim for UC but as per Davids post "Until your first assessment period is complete, Universal Credit doesn't entitle you to help with NHS costs."
