PIP Light touch review - invited to assessment

I completed the light touch review as my son's appointee, following the advice in the guides and didn't attach any further information as there is no change in his presentation or how his illnesses affect him since transferring from DLA to PIP as an adult.

I returned my the form in June and have now been invited to a video assessment which I wasn't expecting.

Has anyone else had an assessment after the light touch form has been completed? Not sure what to expect, do I go with the assessment guide for normal applications?

Hi Sunny

That is unusual, but it is not unknown. Hopefully, someone will be able to tell you about their experience.

Make sure that you record the assessment. And yes, I would prepare by looking through the same questions - they won't ask them all - but best to be prepared.

Be aware that there have been troubles with video assessments, and they sometimes go wrong at the last minute, and then they revert to a phone assessment. I hope this doesn't happen to you, but I wanted you to be forewarned.

The assessment was today. In a word, it was horrific!

The video assessment was delayed an hour and they offered a phone call instead which I accepted. Unfortunately the line wasn't the best and the assessor was foreign and I really struggled to hear her and understand her. I had to keep asking her to repeat herself or ask the question in a different way as I didn't understand what she was asking.

She started the call by saying I had filled in a IR1 (I hadn't and corrected her) and then said I hadn't listed any of the conditions (there isn't anywhere on the form to put this so told her that too).

I had the descriptors ready with my examples and this is what I had used to check the original award and if the support required was the same - it was.

She then asked questions in relation to 'autism' which didn't match the descriptors and completely threw me. She kept saying she'd come back to something I mentioned but it was hard to keep up as didn't follow the questions.

I am just glad I did the call as my son would have had a meltdown trying to make sense of this - my head hurts just thinking about it.

They asked questions like 'what sensory issues does he have'. It really threw me. I just froze and scanned my documents but felt like I didn't get my point across (or knew what bit I should be saying).

All in all an awful experience and the first one in the history of claiming (20 years) that I have felt like this so guess should count myself lucky.

I didn't record it, do they do that automatically? I will contact them in a couple of days for the report and then begin to pull a case together as expect it to be a negative outcome if how I feel is anything to go by.

All I can say to anyone who receives a light touch review for an ongoing award is to put an example or reasoning why the difficulties are still there - unlike me who just ticked no after reading the guidance :(

Hi Sunny.

I'm sorry that it was so horrific. No, they don't automatically record assessments - you have to ask, and even then, it doesn't always happen. That's why I suggested that you record it yourself if you were able. It is very odd that after all this time, they suddenly decided to do an assessment like that.

I hope that despite your experience, you still get the same award for your son.
