Living apart married was created by Blueallblue
Me and my partner are getting married later this year.
We plan to live apart for few years due to circumstances, I have 3 dogs she has one and a teenage son ect.
I own my home she rents from council.

At the moment we are both on benifits but are not financially dependent on each other and this will be the same once we are married.I. E separate bank accounts ect

We are trying to find out how being married but living apart is going to affect our benefits but getting different answers so far.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Blueallblue

Getting married even if you are not going to live together and are not going to change your surnames is one of the changes that you need to inform the DWP about.
If you are changing your surname then you can take the relevant document into your local Jobcentre for them to copy and forward to DWP admin.
All UC claimants get an annual Automated Claimant review and you can expect extra scrutiny of your circumstances and quite possibly a home visit from one of the DWP Visiting Team.

Thanks for your reply.
Is it likely our benifits will be cut even though we will be living apart and both finiacly independent?

Hi BlueallBlue

No your Benefits will not be cut if you keep separate households and are not living together as a couple.
It is not only the DWP which will look into this but if you claim a Single Person's Discount the Council Tax department.

No we would not be living as a couple and deff separate households but we wondered if we would need a better reason than dogs and her teenage son?
Surely we would still qualify for single persons council tax as we are still living as a single person.

Hi Blueallblue

You will still qualify but expect the council to send you out a single occupier discount review form when they are informed of your marriage.
