moving from wrag to support group was created by hassled mum
hello, I was placed in the wrag in oct 2010 after a successful ATOS medical with the evidence provided on the day and the discussion with the doctor at the medical about my history. This was six monsths ago and now my situation has deteriorated especially walking and physical activities. I saw a Professor of rheumatology in March whose report has now arrived and states my condition as chronic, deteriorating causing limited walking and chronic long term pain also states patient unable to work, amongst other statements supporting a life long situation. unfortunately this is a second condition to be diagnosed with, which I did not have a diagnosis for when I applied for esa and DLA (for which I receive hr mobility)I had problems with walking and the other condition neuro affecting heart causes severe breathlessnes chest pain and high levels of fatigue. In all these med issues have caused my health to deteriorate further over the last six months and was wondering if I should ask for a re assessment for ESA, as said above already in wrag, so am looking for move to support group, and what the process is?
Many thanks in advance

You will need to write to the DWP office which handles your ESA claim, and explain that your medical condition has now deteriorated, and you wish to be considered for the support group.

The DWP will carry out a supersession of your current ESA award which will in all probabilities lead to another work capability assessment, commencing with the issue of an ESA50 to assess the extent of your health deterioration.

Could that assessment end up with the person being found fit for work ?

In order to be found eligible for the ESA Support Group, you will need to demonstrate that you meet one or more of the relevant criteria, these are explained in the Understanding ESA guide in the Members area.

As CD has said, this will more than likely mean that you will receive a new ESA50 to complete, you need to be aware that the DWP will review your case in full, and whils it is rare, this can result in your losing your existing WRAG status, so think carefully before doing this and if possible consider getting face to face advice from your local CAB or Welfare Rights.

As Gordon says, there is unfortunately a caveat that asking for a supersession of a subsisting ESA award, could possibly result in a claimant being found fit for work.

thankyou all for your replies, it's a very difficult decision to make. I don't know how many points I got at my medical at least 30, and the issues that put me into the wrag still exist and have increased. As I am on contributions based ESA I will lose it under the 12 month ruling in Nov 2011 anyway  If I think the risk of supersession means that I lose what I already have then I will sit it out. but is it possible to re apply for esa contibutions based after my 12 months are up as the difference in the two rates (wrag & support) is not massive. As I have 6 months left on c based esa I assume they will write over the summer to offer income based, we will not be eligable for that as my husband earns just over the threshold, he works all hours to make up for my loss in income. So it's a gamble I will think about because I will probably lose the benefit in Nov under the 12 month limit. Both my consultants feel that going back to work would significantly compromise my health and I still have many hospital appointments to attend. As the dwp ask for notification of a change in condition would it be worth just sending them the latest reports with a covering letter as an information exercise. I don't mind re attending a medical, just hate the forms :S
