Appeals tribunal Fibromyalgia was created by Queenarc
could anyone please give me advice on my forthcoming appeal on the 28th July. I am 61years of age and have worked in heavy engineering since I was 15. Two years' ago I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. I have varying degrees of pain and physical distress. The symptoms of fibromyalgia can vary from day to day in as much it can be debilitating and I find movement very difficult and painful. The worst symptom is utter fatigue.. I was given zero points at my medical and the doctor who performed it had no comprehension of fibromyalgia or the symptoms of it...he was completely ignorant, unaware and had no education of it. I am really at a loss as to how to handle this appeal because of the disregard and ignorance the dept of health and social security have in relation to fibromyalgia and as a result my confidence and self esteem are minimal. Any helpful comments and input would be extremely gratefully received...

I am assuming this is an ESA appeal, because of your reference to points.
Your diagnosis is less important than the effects of your illness on you ability to somplete the ESA tests.
I think my immediate suggestion if for you to read two of our guides in the Members area.
First have a look at the ESA Appeals guide, this explains the appeal process and what your reponsibilities are.
Secondly, have a look at the ESA Claims on Physical Grounds, which explains in detail what each of the physical tests for ESA actually entail.
You need to think about how you would answer these questions based on your own conditions. Remember that to complete the tests you need to be able to do so repeatably, without severe discomfort or pain, and without suffering exhaustion or tiredness.
Understanding these points will allow you to answer the questions you will likely be asked at the hearing.
I'm sure other will be able to contribute to your thread and if you have futher questions. please come back to the forum.

Hi Paul
If you check out UK Fibromyalgia you may find some useful information. On that site click on benefits and then case worker. They may be able to give you more specialist advice.
If you can obtain a report from your Hospital and GP this will add weight to your appeal. Also statements from people who know you and how the condition affect your daily life.
There will a Doctor on the appeal board.
Good Luck

Paul,
I found the Arthrits Care Charity very helpful and if you have the 'osteo' flavour you may want to check out their help lines or booklets, or both.
There is a lot of free info and they are (in my opinion) cheap to actually join too.
Good luck
