Are there any exceptional circumstances to the rulr about income-based ESA and savings over £16?
Hi C,
I assume you mean the upper limit on capital of £16,000, for means tested benefits.
Have a look at the info on the link below.:

This is something I have been wondering about (not that I actually think I would be eligible for income based benefits). My husband is self-employed and has a savings account into which he deposits money to pay his tax bill and to buy his next car (he's a cabbie). Without this money he would not be able to continue his occupation or meet his tax liability. Is any leeway allowed for this or is it a case that 'savings are savings are savings'?
Hi MHB,
Doesn't your husband have a seperate business account for such monies that are necessary for the upkeep and smooth running of his business?.
Does he have an accountant who could advise?.
Please remember also that even if your joint capital was zero, all income into the household would be counted in the means test for IR ESA, or any other means tested benefit.
cheers

Yes, it is for this reason that I believe we would not qualify for any income based benefits. My husband already works more than 50 hours a week to keep the roof over our heads, heaven knows what he will have to do without my wage!!
