Just seen your reply, seems like a good idea if all fails.

Any idea if a private assessment will be accepted or have any members been sucessful with this and gained S/G????

Radhika.

Hi R,

A private assessment should be treated with the same importance as an NHS assessment, as long as the assessor has the correct qualifications.

Any form of written evidence that supports that fact that it would not be Reasonable for your friend to use a manual wheelchair unaided, should help.

I am not sure of the outcome - or even whether this was discussed on this site or elsewhere! It would seem, to me, to be a last-ditch path if all else has failed.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Just to add to the above,

Besides obvious limitations that may make bar the use of a manual wheelchair unaided, such as sitting limitations(lumber spinal problems) upper body limitation (Cervical spinal) arthritis, neck problems, grip problems, breathlessness caused through respiratory problems, cardio vascular problems.

The use of a manual wheelchair may be unsuitable, as one's G.P. wants a patient to use their legs as much as possible to stop muscle wastage.

It may be "Unreasonable" due to restraints caused by your accommodation, stairs, storage, etc.

All these things should be taken into account.

Remember also that activity 2 of The SG descriptors is also relevant to use of a manual wheelchair unaided :

"2. Transferring from one seated position to another.

Cannot move between one seated position and another seated position located next to one another without receiving physical assistance from another person."

From :

SG (LCWRA) Descriptors

To use a wheelchair of any kind, one would have to be able to transfer from say, a chair, or a loo, to a wheelchair unaided, or vice versa.

You have given many scinarios that are relevant and to be honest we had not even considered.

They have been really helpful and has shed some light as to which would be the best direction for her to go, to taking all her problems into consideration.

Thanks a million.
