Telephone Assessment. Asked about timings. was created by Rambling Ted
I had my phone assessment last Friday . Do they normally ask about how long it takes to get dressed and bath etc. I wasn't expecting it and had to guess at times although I did say It varies and I don't really now exactly. ?

Also for walking , I had timed myself for how long it takes to walk 50 metres . she asked How long can I walk for without stopping.

Hi Rambling Ted

Yes, some assessors do ask such questions. They are extremely off-putting because when did anyone ever time themselves in getting dressed? The problem is that assessors are not consistent - so you and others have been asked and then other claimants with a similar condition to yourself won't be. If you want to you can ring tomorrow and ask for a copy of the assessment report (PA4).

Funny/odd you mention this Rambling Ted. I keep trying to self-assess ready to tackle my own application and noted it takes me about 40 mins to get washed and dressed and deal with morning medication, not including a shower. Does anyone agree with me that is 'more than twice the normal time'?

Hi Rambling Ted,

It really throws you when you are asked how long something takes. As BIS says whoever thinks to time themselves getting dressed?

Such questions are an intrusion, in my opinion.

A few years ago, I was asked how long it took me to do my shopping. I said from leaving my flat to getting home, probabably about 40 minutes.

In the report it stated that I'd told the assessor that I walk around the supermarket for 40 minutes and therefore have no mobility issues.

Of course this was an outright mistruth. Luckily it got sorted out at the MR stage.

I'd advise anyone to be cautious how they answer any such questions as, again in my opinion, they are designed to trip you up when you are off your guard.

By the way, I haven't really been active on here for a bit due to catching the dreaded Covid bug. Hopefully I am over the worst of it, fingers crossed.

Regards,

Phrank.

Hi Denby

What is normal? I don't think anyone knows, and I'm not sure that it's fair to try and judge in that manner. As Phrank says - this type of question can be used to try and trick someone and as people don't actually know and haven't measured and recorded it over a period of time - it's difficult to assess. And when one person says they have had a wash - what does that mean - fully body wash at the sink, on the edge of a bed, face wash, top part of body only? Did they clean their teeth, floss or not floss, use mouthwash? There are so many variables that would change the timings. When I've helped people fill in forms, I have never quoted specific timings for any actions, I have only said how many times they may have stopped in the process.
