I see Income-related Employment and Support Allowance will get a one off £650. What about contribution based ESA (Support Group) - is this means tested?

Hi Tuliptrees,
ESA contribution based is NOT means tested. From what I have read I do not think that ESAcb will qualify for the payments. As well as the £650 one-off payment, separate one-off payments of £300 will go to pensioners and £150 for those receiving disability benefits. I think it may be a question of waiting for more news as to how payments will actually be paid, but currently ESAcb does not appear to qualify.
I hope this helps.

It really is not right that Contribution Based (beneficiary) ESA & DLA do not get the £650. 00 payment.

It was the same with Universal Credit £20.00 per week (nearly £1000 over 12 months) extra payment for Covid, Contribution Based got nothing.

Hi skcollobcat10

It is because it is not a means tested benefit, some claimants who get CB ESA also get a top up IR ESA due to disability premiums, but it does depend on their circumstances.

once again cb esa missed out on much needed extra help. We did not get the £20 uplift . Its not necessarily true that to say the cb esa is not means tested because it is in a way. If you have a private pension above a certain amount you lose some or all your cb esa, so in essence it is means tested, and also its taxable. That extra finance would assist us no end as not receiving any ir we are very much worse of in many cases, as we do not get the passporting an ir benefit gives one. Surely this is something this site should assist in fighting as once again we lose out. I think it is unfair and I am sure others just on cb esa will agree. The xmas it may only be £10, i do not receive either as being only on cb esa. Finances are extremely tight but as I get IIB I am not intitled to any ir topups, there must plenty of others in this tight spot. totally unfair and biased
