PIP REVIEW FACE TO FACE ASSESSMENT? was created by Jane 21
Sent off Review assessment paperwork last year with tonne load of evidence. Got extension. Was waiting for review. Got letter this morning saying my daughter needs to attend a face-to-face assessment? Why would this be when they have all the info and more and it will cause a lot more stress and she is unable to communicate efficiently. Please advise. We are all in a state.

Hi Jane21

I can't tell you why they have asked for a face-to-face assessment. Most people say they have sent in lots of information, but the fact is that the majority of people still have to go through an assessment. It's an unpleasant but mostly unavoidable part of the system.

You could ring and ask if they would reconsider the type of assessment - and do a paper-based assessment because of the stress a face-to-face assessment would cause her. However, you will need to show that because of her current medical condition, it would cause her "overwhelming psychological distress" to have a face-to-face assessment. This isn't easy to prove, and there is no actual measurement for 'overwhelming psychological distress', but it is severe. You could argue that she would be unable to give a fair account of herself. However, even when someone has obtained a doctor's backing to get their assessment changed, the DWP or assessment services won't budge and change it.

You could ask them to change from a face-to-face assessment to a telephone assessment. Some members here have been successful in getting theirs changed. Obviously, a telephone assessment is still stressful, but many people consider them better than a face-to-face.

Just be aware the DWP/Assessment services do not have a legal requirement to change the type of assessment.
