UC and Divorce was created by sas401
Helping a friend who is currently going through a divorce. He has no money at all and cant work due to health issues. Have got him started on ESA and PIP, but wondering about UC. Can he claim just on his own as although they still live in same house till sold, they dont have anything to do with one another. If he can, do i just mark it as single when asked?

It is possible to make a claim for UC as a single person in these circumstances but they are going to need to show the separation of their lives, the following is the DWP guidance in regard to couples.

Yes, I guess they would mark themselves as single when making the claim but they should make a note of their actual circumstances during the application if possible (sorry can't say where) or in their Journal at the earliest opportunity.
