Pension credit, not awarded severe disability addition despite PIP enhanced rate was created by nordman
I jointly applied for pension credit together with my wife. I get PIP enhanced rates for both components and my wife care for me and has underlying entitlement for carer allowance, but not receive CA payment because is overlapping with State pension. I receive pension credit award but there is no sever disability addition of £86.05 per week in the award. I contacted DWP and been advised that me and my wife should both get PIP to be eligible for severe disability addition. Is The DWP agent gave me incorrect information. DWP website says: If you have a severe disability You could get an extra £86.05 a week if you get any of the following:
- the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP). Can someone help, please.

Hi nordman
On the face of it it appears that you qualify for a single SDP. However I would read the following guide to check that you meet all the eligibility criteria.

Let us know how you get on.

The DWP is correct. In order to qualify for an additional amount for severe disability, both of you must receive either PIP (either rate of daily living), DLA (middle or higher rate care) or AA (either rate of AA). If only one of you receives any of the above then the SDA is not payable.
However, as your wife has underlying entitlement to Carer's Allowance your Pension Credit should include a Carer Addition.

Hi Robbie
Thank you , what you say appears to be correct. In the case above both members of the couple need to be in receipt of " a qualifying Benefit " for the SDP to be paid.
PENSION CREDIT : additional amount for severe disability
To be entitled to this, you must meet all of the following conditions:
you must be getting a qualifying benefit (see below);
you must live alone (there are exceptions to this rule, eg if you just live with your partner and they also get a qualifying benefit); and
no one gets carer's allowance, carer support payment or the universal credit carer amount for looking after you.
The following are ‘qualifying benefits’:
the care component of disability living allowance (DLA) or Scottish adult DLA at the middle or highest rate;
attendance allowance or pension age disability payment;
constant attendance allowance (paid with the Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes);
the daily living component of personal independence payment or adult disability payment; or
armed forces independence payment.
