ESA WCA paper based assesment request was created by Krumblesnore
Hello

I found my PIP telephone assessment really distressing and felt awful for days and it triggered a migraine.
I may have my ESA WCA call coming up soon and I've written a very detailed follow up document and my wca50 and lots of evidence.
I was considering requesting a paper based assesment. My GP would agree to give evidence to support me needing that.

I'm aware they may well say no.

I wanted to ask-
1. Is it a good or bad idea in terms of if it will impact the outcome?

My thinking is that with PIP they didn't listen and talked over me, wrote down glaring errors and used the same copied and pasted irrelevant reasoning for every activity explanation.
At least if it's all written down maybe it's harder to just completely ignore

2. Is the ESA WCA call as brutal as PIP? Will it be as difficult to do?

Thank you

Hi Krumblesnore

You say "My thinking is that with PIP they didn't listen and talked over me, wrote down glaring errors and used the same copied and pasted irrelevant reasoning for every activity explanation." This has also been reported by claimants regarding a UC/ESA medical assessment. The assessment is supposed to be inquisitorial rather than adversarial but in reality it is the latter approach that is taken. The assessor will try and pick holes in the claimant's evidence in the same way as the prosecution in a court case.
So having a paper based assessment is reducing the adversarial element. Also paper based assessments are prioritised for those with more serious health conditions.
It is the luck of the draw though whether you get an empathetic assessor or not. It would be unfortunate for someone with a complex mental disorder to be assessed by a physiotherapist or paediatric nurse but this does happen.
