You need to recontact them, and ask for written confirmation of your award of ESA, and which group you have been placed in.

This will depend on your personal circumstances, and whether your ESA, no matter which group, is Income Related (Income Based), or Contributary, this will depend on whether you have the necessary NI Contributions, and which benefit you were previously in receipt of, if you have been migrated over to ESA.

This means that the results of your medical assessment, and any subsequent recommendations made by the ATOS HCP who carried out the medical, along with your ESA50 and any other medical evidence, have gone to the DWP Decision Maker, who actually makes the decision on whether you qualfy for an award of ESA under the qualifying criteria and ESA regulations.

If this is the case, then you can not be sure that you have been awarded ESA in any group, until you receive written notification of the DWP DM's decision.

This is why it is not wise to take notice of information given over the phone, although of course, you may have still passed your medical, you will have to wait for the written confirmation.

If you have not been migrated over from one of the benefits mentioned on this link :

Then I must assume that this is a fresh claim for ESA, and will therefore depend on your NI Contribution record, and whether this entitles you to Contributary ESA.

Again you should be informed on your award decision letter, when you receive it, whether your ESA is IR, or Contributary.

Either of the above is not a matter of choice and will be decided by the DWP.
