Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

Been trying to call for a week to advise I'm starting work. Wait on hold for 45min - 3 hours and if anyone actually answers they hang up without speaking. Tried both the number ending 0190 and the one ending 0310, and tried both the option to change/cancel an appointment, and the one about JSA existing claim.

For the past 3 days I've been trying to get through to Jobcentre Plus ESA as I've been offered a job and want to let them know what is happening, but I'm just stuck on hold! The longest I've been on hold is 2 hours and in the end I hung up because I couldn't be bothered anymore. It's ridiculous that they tell you to report a change in circumstance as soon as possible but when you try to, you physically can't!

Need to make a new claim but not sure which benefit is correct so tried ringing for advice. 13.5 hours on hold over 10 days! Trying to get through options to speak to someone is impossible just refers you to website. Tried local job centre….3 hours on hold in 2 days! Disgraceful service and shows the lack of consideration to people.

trying to contact PIP office regarding reassessment which they regard as urgent and must be dealt with within 2 weeks otherwise PIP will be withdrawn. That was September 22, they delayed it 2 weeks and have never been back. have tried to get through many occasions since to follow up including  4 times so far this week but can never get through and the calls cut off after waiting over 30 mins each time. Appalling stress on people.

Cant get through to future pensions 0800 731 0175.  Start at 08:00hrs every morning. line simply cuts off at the end of every sequence.  Phone line wont allow you to hold and wait for anyone.  Takes approx 1 min 30 each time I call then cut off and start again. Tried various other numbers but no one else can/will help.  have checked forecast online.  Must now speak to someone. what should I do?  Can anyone help?
