Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

I have been trying to get through to income support on 0800 169 0310. But no one ever answers!!!!! It’s keeps me on hold. This is now my 3rd day of trying - I’m on hold right now as I’m writhing this.
They wrote to me asking for information but how I’m I suppose to give to them if they don’t pick up the phone- it’s ridiculous

Have been trying to reach PIP for 4 months. Have held a hundred times for 2.5 hours and then cut off. Now they cut you off after 20-30 minutes.
Can’t change my address and most importantly, am left without a vehicle because they haven’t sent letter confirming my claim is extended by a year due to the assessment backlogs and mobility requires that to allow you to have the mobility vehicle that I need to be able to leave my home.
    Truly atrocious.

I have been trying to get hold of the Employment Support team for over a week now.  I have made several attempts.  First attempt I was holding for 43 minutes and then got cut off.  2nd 3rd and 4th attempts holding for over 1 hour and a half to no avail.  Currently on hold and it's just gone over the hour mark.  Still holding but losing the will to live.  They tell you to notify them of changes etc, but don't answer the phone when you try.

    Telephone: 0800 169 0310
phoned yesterday at 4 o clock, still no answer by 5pm and then i waited another half an hour only to realise the lines shut at 5pm and no-one was ever going to answer the call so i hung up. have been on hold waiting now for 45 minutes this afternoon and do not have time to just sit waiting listening to the exact same tune and message twice a minute. I haven'rt had a payment since january, my workcoach says i have to talk to the support line they can't help - what on earth am I supposed to do if I can't get through?

I’ve tried 4 times after receiving a text from DWP asking me to call them. I’ve put in a new claim. Each time I’ve called I’ve waited over an hour for sn answer. I have had to hang up each time. 08001690310. It’s not good enough. First time I’ve been out of work in 25 years. Soul destroying.

Says 58 mins minimum wait time I tried that still no answer for PIP.
For change of circumstance can’t u write to them instead or does it have to be a phone call because clearly they not answering.
Did try three times from 9 am 23 mins and 33 mins but when I googled says minimum wait time 58 mins.  Didn’t happen.
    Unbelievable. ((

@Christina You can try writing to them like I've done (twice in the last 18 months - even recorded delivery), but they still haven't responded.
