Carers Allowance was created by Marie22
This (to me) seems a little complicated so I'll try my best to be concise. I get Dla high rate, ESA Support & have for a few years. My husband was made redundant last year. For the 1st six months he claimed JSA contributory, he was the told he wasn't entitled to anything more except his nat ins. This was since the 2nd week of November. We then became aware that he could have been claiming carers allowance, so we applied. We were under the impression it could be backdated 3mths (& applied for this on the form) Last week we got our allowance accepted.

However, it states that he is entitled to carers £61.35 pw from 13/10/14 to now = £858. It then states LESS JSA allowance paid to you during the period you are due Carer's allowance = £858. So this has been deducted. Total due £10 (Xmas bonus)

I'm confused. I thought there would be a top up difference between JSA & Carers for the 1st 2 weeks of November & then the full carers since he hasn't received any benefit, apart from Nat Ins since. Can you give me any advice, or clearer understanding of this. Thank you.

JSA(CB) and CA are overlapping benefits so I am not surprised that there has been a reduction in the back payment, ideally you should have backdated the CA from the day after his JSA claim ceased, however, you should be entitled to back payments from that date.

All I can suggest is that you contact the Carers Allowance Unit for more information.

Thank you Gordon. We did speak to the Carers department, they said they are still waiting to hear back from the JSA department & any outstanding benefit will be paid but in the meantime they have allowed the allowance from now. Hopefully it will be backdated from when JSA ceased.
