Which benefit should I apply for was created by John Stewart
I have suffered with depression for at least 12 years. I have managed to work during this time but with lots of time off. I am struggling now to work and am taking voluntary redundancy very soon. Which benefit should I be applying for as I don't believe I am fit to work now with this condition. I am 57.

If your GP is prepared to issue a Fit Note saying you are unfit for work then you can apply for ESA, have a read of our Understanding ESA guide and ESA Claim guides to see whether you would meet the criteria. See

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/esa1

If you have on-going Care and/or Mobility needs then you may be able to apply for PIP, have a look at our PIP Claim guide for details.
