Hi everyone,I just wondered if someone could explain to me,how changes to disability benefits,
are thrashed out in government ?

to cut, means test, or abolish a benefit, would the conservatives need to have the backing of all its mps,
for it to be passed ?

I would be very grateful for your help and Thank you.

Hi C,

There are 650 M.P.'s in Parliament, so for a Bill to be passed the majority of the 650 need to vote in support of it.

i.e. 326 M.P.'s (over half)

The Tories have 331 so if they all vote for a Bill, it will pass eventually, maybe after some amendments suggested by The Lords.

It can go back and to for some time between The Commons and The Lords, this is known as "ping-pong".

Theoretically the Tories should have no problems pushing through whatever they wish to, unless some Tories revolt.

Even then, they may be able to call on the likes of the 8 DUP M.P.'s from N Ireland for support.

I'll lock this topic to stop it developing into a political discussion.
