Student with cancer

Hi, my daughter is a full time student who has just be diagnosed with lymphoma. She hopes to continue her studies with having treatment. Are their any benefits she might be rntitiled to? Thanks for reading this.

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter's diagnosis. I think it is every parent's nightmare, no matter how old the offspring!

It is not the diagnosis that attracts benefits but the limitations occasioned by it. For a claim of Personal Independence Payment, the claimant must have had the limitations for at least 3 months before claiming and they must be expected to last for at least another 9 months.

PIP help for claimants

Employment Support Allowance is not payable to full-time students unless they are also in receipt of PIP.

There are special rules for both of these benefits if there is a reasonable expectation that the claimant will not live for more than 3 months. I sincerely hope this does not apply to your daughter - but please come back to us if it does.

Other than that, I'm afraid I can't think of any other benefits that would be applicable. However, your daughter should make sure she gets all the support possible from her University if she hopes to carry on with her studies while undergoing treatment.
