PIP Points Award. was created by Cochyn-1
Hi, I received my PIP decision today. I was given the enhanced award for both mobility and care for four years. I would like to thank all at Work and Benefits for their invaluable help and advice.
However the points awarded for the care component were completely at odds with the applicable descriptors.
Because I suffer with Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome and severe mobility problems I am completely unable to safely prepare and cook food for myself. Although this was made absolutely clear in both my form and at my face to face assessment I was awarded 2 points for preparing food using an aid! How could they have possibly come to that decision. It is a similar situation with dressing, toilet needs and bathing. Apparently I use aids for all of these activities which is absolutely untrue! By the way I receive an I Industrial Injuries Award for life for my HAVS and was awarded DLA indefinitely for this disease.
I don't want to rock the boat but I feel I should have these decisions explained to me and if possible changed. Could you advise me on the best course of action.
Thanks very much, Ian J.

Ian

First of all congratulations on the award and thank you for your comments about B&W.

I'm afraid we do see this and there is little that you can do without requesting a reconsideration of the original Decision, which I am guessing that you do not want to do!

If you have not already done so then you can request a copy of the assessment report by contacting the DWP office that dealt with your claim, this may give you a better understanding of how the DM came to their conclusions.

It's very unlikely that anyone will look at this assessment when they look at your claim next time so this shouldn't be an issue.

Hi Gordon, I'm sorry that I haven't been in touch sooner. Thank you very much for your advice, it's very much appreciated. There is one option on the letter I received that you can ask for a written explanation of how the points decision was made.
Short of asking for a reassessment maybe this could help me make sense of the descriptors applied to me....or not!
I appreciate that the next assessment in 2020 may not make use of this one. However, I'm concerned that if I don't question it they may use it against me. As you can tell I'm a born worrier!
Thanks again, Ian J.

You should have received the DM's Statement of Reasons with the Decision Letter, if you did not then you can certainly request a copy, however, if you did then I think it unlikely that you will receive any more detailed elaboration of how the points were awarded.
