38 Degrees has just launched a new petition against Benefits Claimants being charged Premium-rates just for phoning DWP:
Exposed: The government’s been slammed by their own experts for forcing struggling families needing welfare support to call a premium rate number. [1] So 38 Degrees member Jim is campaigning to stop the rip-off charges.
The politician in charge of this decision, Damian Green, has just started his new job. [3] The last thing he’ll want is bad publicity. If enough of us sign the petition now, the public pressure added to the damning verdict from his own experts, could convince Green to scrap the premium rate phone line.

Here’s what Jim has to say:
“It’s difficult enough as it is living on disability benefits without being charged 45p a minute to call the DWP.
"More often than not it’s their mistake you’re rectifying when you call. I don’t see why anyone should be charged such an extortionate fee for simply making a phone call”
The government’s main defence of the charges is that people can now claim their benefits online. But 1 in 6 people have never been online and places to access the internet, like libraries, are closing up and down the country. [4] The argument simply doesn't fly - and it’s up to us to expose it.
The damning report on the premium rate phone line was snuck out yesterday, right before MPs leave Parliament for the summer. The government’s probably hoping it got buried in amongst other news. A huge petition right now will show them it hasn’t. It could convince them to stop forcing struggling families to pay extortionate phone bills.
