Hi.
I have M.E. Moderate to severe.
Most days I'm out of action , I have relapses where I'm worse and can have a few days when I'm better.

The reason for my post is this.
I claim ESA income-related in the support group
I claim DLA high rate mobility low rate care.
I'm miserable, one thing I do like doing when I feel up to it is play my guitar.

My Dad is in a group and has said a few times before I should come along when I'm up to it but have always been scared to Incase someone thinks I'm doing something wrong (obviously being on stage looking normal is one thing but it would take me 3-4 days after to recover)

So my Dad has asked me to at least ask ESA and DLA if I am able to do it once a month,
Would involve walking,talking,playing guitar,singing a bit for 2 hours.

Would likely help where I can with lighter gear.
I rang ESA to ask and was told they would send me a form out to fill in for Volantury work and put my Dad as an employer and to write if I would be getting any more.
I'm not sure money would change hands but if it did it would likely be £20 or something maybe.

The lady on the phone kept telling me it was absolutely fine to do little Hingis like this and not to worry and fill the form out..... Now is this a trap to get me to say I can do a little more sometimes?

In my forms I put what is like 90% of the time, it is 100% truthful and I do suffer badly and have various symptoms, I take Tramadol for pain.

It's really something to left my mood but can't do it if it will affect my benefit as I hav 3 children and a wife to think about here.

Any help would be great.

From what you have posted it sounds like this would come under the heading of Permitted Work rather your volunteering, the reason I say this is that you mention that there could be a payment for what you are doing.

It should not be a problem your doing this as PW, providing that nothing you are doing on these nights is contrary to your stated limitations.

There's a guide to PW in the ESA section.

Well obviously I said on the forms what I'm like on an average day/bad day.

The thing with my illness is that I cannot sustain activity.
I can sometimes manage a longer walk etc. , but not too much.

I'm not sure any money would change hands, it's just really that he's in a band and said if I every feel up to it I could play.

This would be once a month as or when I have properly rested in preparation and recover after,

I just don't want to say I can do something I can do, and then they think I'm able to do it constantly without my health getting very bad.

So say it asks in the form, can you lift and box over your head?
Yes I can on a good day
Can I walk 100 metres unassisted ?
Yes I can on a good day

But my fatigue would be much worse the following days if I over exert myself.
I have a limited amount of energy, it's just an idea to have something to look forward to doing but can't/won't do it if I'm not supposed to of course.

Don't forget that you have to be able to do things reliably, not just once and never again!

As Gordon says, there is a guide to Permitted Work in the ESA section.

Just to be clear if this "work" has any anticipation of payment, even if it is not realised then it will not be counted as volunteering, realistically to be classed as volunteering you would need to be doing it for a registered charity.

As far as I know there's no payment. That's not why I'm interested in doing it.
My Dad does various things with different groups and I'm on about going along once a month with him . Maybe I'll get £10-£20 a month.

Only thing is I don't know if I should because if I say I can do it will they twist that into I can work then if I'm able to do that once a month.

I need something to do as I've been very down, I may not even be able to do it but want to do it the right way if I can.

My review is next March , if I fill the forms out will this count against me?

I'm getting re referred to a CFS/me specialist and they say it's a great idea and will fully support me with a letter if needed as I've mentioned before to them I like playing guitar
