House sale query was created by bennie
(Apologies in advance if I've not done this correctly but it is a new topic for me so have started a new topic!)
Claiming ESA PIP and just wondering if I were to sell my house due to mobility etc. and move in with a relative in a different borough temporarily until I found somewhere else (unless I have to stay permanently because I can't) then obviously I have to inform DWP but at what point do the DWP count the money from the sale as savings? My understanding is it's after 6 months but if you couldn't find a new house and stayed more permanently with the relative would the DWP then reclaim the money you'd had in the previous 6 months, if that makes sense.
And if I move to a different borough, will the DWP make me reapply for everything, have new medicals etc. or is it just a case of informing them of change of circumstances i.e. address etc. and things will continue as they are?
Thanks in advance

We can't give detailed financial advice on the forum, you should get face to face advice from a trained advisor.
PIP is not affected.
If your ESA is Contribution Based only then it won't be affected.
If you receive Income Related ESA in whole or in part the it may be effected.
The proceeds from the sale of the house you are living in are normally disregarded for 26 weeks and longer if the DWP believe you are looking for a new house.
If you do not buy a new house or the DWP that you do not intend to use the money within a reasonable timescale to buy a new property then it will be treated as capital and as a result it may mean that your ESA(IR) payments are stopped.
Asset rule for ESA(IR)
A change of address should not result in a reassessment of either your ESA or PIP.

Hi
I got some further advice as suggested and the info regarding if ESA is contribution based and you're in support group like me then it appears that it won't be affected by house sale and money from that.
Just to double check how do you tell if your ESA is income related or contribution based or both, though?
On my award letter it seems ambiguous ie:
'Your income related amount is 125.05 less17.00 (savings deducted) you would have been entitled to 108.05
However because you are entitled to contribution-based ESA we will pay you 109.30'
So is this in fact contribution-based even though they go on about IR ESA? Adviser seemed to think so
Thanks in advance any clarification

Hi Bennie,
It certainly sounds as if you are in receipt of contributory ESA only.
