I'm on contributory ESA, and didn't realise I was doing something that could be classed as volunteering - a friend asked me to advise on something for his charity related to my old job and as a result I give him about half an hour every few weeks to help on a technical issue. I've told DWP I want permission to volunteer, so I have a letter to respond to.
I'm not sure if the start date should be when my friend started chatting to me or when I rang to ask permission.
There's not much information on volunteering, just that you have to get permission, so any information would be useful.

It should not be an issue with you volunteering, the key issue is that there should be no reasonable expectation of payment for the advice you are providing. I would keep it simple and tell the date that you started providing the advice, but it is of course your decision.

Thanks very much Gordon. The information is so vague I wasn't certain what was needed. When I rang DWP to ask if what I was doing constituted voluntary work, the person who answered really didn't know, and then didn't know how to collect the information. Since then my local office has sent a list of questions.
