Can I apply for PIP while starting a ESA appeal?

I've been turned down for ESA after being on Severe Disablement Allowance for 17 years, does anyone know if I can apply for PIP while I start the process of an appeal for this decision regarding ESA. Looking at the benefit I think I'd be better suited to PIP because of my illnesses but I'm scared to not go through with the appeal as my benefits have been stopped.

ESA is an 'income replacement benefit' whilst PIP is meant to help meet some of the added expenses associated with disability. They are different benefits with very different criteria.

It is not a case of either/or, many people are in receipt of both. However, one does not depend on the other, there are also many people who are in receipt of only one of these.

Your pending ESA appeal will have no effect on a PIP claim. I suggest that you have a good look at our PIP guide which explains the process.
