Carer Return to Working? was created by Keith
Hi. I'm a carer for my husband who suffers from MS. We fought and won the move from DLA and so he's on the enhanced PIP and I claim careers allowance as I did before the change. I am at a crossroads though re working or claiming careers allowance now as I've been offered work on a self employed/ freelance basis and don't know what to do? It means I could work around Keith and his needs as I'm a chef and would be working shifts while he sleeps and I'd be able to pick and choose wether to work and if so, when.
My concern is that it will be feast or famine as hospitality is very seasonal and also, I would be working PT hours but some weeks more than others, and when off sick r taking holiday I won't earn, whereas my careers is paid regardless.
I had a bad accident in June and haven't been able to work until now and so I've not earned at all. As we go into the new year I would like to try and get back out there but how will it effect our finances given that no two days are the same?
Could anyone please offer me any practical advice, or even point me in the right direction where I can get the answers. I'm nervous of speaking to the government bodies tbf, as they may stop all payments and I'm not established as yet as to what I decide. I have though spoken to them and said its just a possibility which they've made a note of. TIA Viv.

To claim Carers Allowance you will need to show that you can provide a minimum of 35 hours of care a week. You can work while receiving CA but cannot earn more than £116 per week after deductions.
Try putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators, this may give you a better understanding of your options, perhaps once for CA, CA and working restricted hours and lastly your just working.
