Good afternoon,

Could someone tell me if you can claim the Severe Disablement Premium when receiving contribution based ESA.

Thank you.

No, you need to be receiving Income Related ESA or entitled to ESA(IR) if the premium were paid.

ESA(IR) is dependant on your household income, your savings and assets, and any hours that your partner works. See

Asset and savings rule for ESA(IR)

24 hour work rule for ESA(IR)

You can check whether you might be eligible by putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators.

Yes, the Premium can be paid with ESA(IR),

- The claimant needs to have a PIP Daily Living award or DLA MRC or HRC (there are others)
- They need to be living alone or considered to be living alone
- No one must be claiming Carers Allowance against the PIP or DLA award.

Entitlement is automatic but they do need to contact the DWP and complete an IS10 form, it should be possible to do this over the phone, it captures information to confirm they meet the criteria.

If they are in the SG and receiving ESA(IR) then they will also be paid the Enhanced Disability Premium, it will show as the Disability Income Guarantee on their Entitlement Letter.
