Writing while claiming

Writing while claiming was created by ELEANOR
I have had ME/CFS since 2002, claimed contributions based ESA since 2003 and claimed PIP since 2015. I wrote poetry as a hobby and continued to do this after I became ill. I also began to write fiction when I felt well enough. After 15 years I have completed a novel. If I publish it, will I be prosecuted for working while claiming sickness/disability benefits, even though I didn't earn any money while writing it?

Hi irisheyes

15 years to write a novel, I cannot see DWP trying to prosecute you. What would change would be if you were given an advance payment for your novel and your savings went over £6k. If you earnt any income then you would have to declare it.

When you say working, what does that involve? I knew a person with cerebal palsy who wrote a book on Campanology using a divice strapped to his head and a specially adapted keyboard, he was also wheelchair user.

Thank you so much! I have been worried sick about this. If given an advance payment I had planned to stop claiming anyway. I have to revise/edit the novel and God alone knows how long that will take but you have set my mind at ease.
