ESA to Universal Credit was created by Ellecole
Hi there,
I'm currently on income related ESA and in the support group. I recently applied for universal credit due to a change in circumstances. I need to apply for housing benefit and applying for UC was the only way I could get that (or so I was told).
I have the online journal and was told I need to submit a fit note.
How do I submit one, do I post it or scan and upload it? I didn't see a section where I can do that.
What is the deadline to submit the note?
What dates does my GP need to put on there, if it's a longstanding illness?
Will I have to continually send fit notes, throughout the duration of my claim?
I did ring the Citizens Advice Bureau but the person I spoke to wasn't very knowledgeable on this.
Thanks in advance

Hi Elle
You need to contact your doctor and ask for a fit note (Med 3 certificate) Gp's don't usually give fit notes for longer than 3 months but there are exceptions. Ideally you want it from when or before you applied for UC.
Your medical practice should be able to email you a fit note, once you get the fit note, upload it on to your journal, always inform your work coach that you have uploaded your fit note. You should be placed in the LCWRA group.
Have you checked out our PIP self checker to see whether or not you may be entitled to claim PIP: www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/personal-indep...nt-pip/pip-self-test
DWP will tell you when they do not need any further fit notes.

Hi Gary
I'm a bit pezzled by this! As the OP was on ESA and in the support group immediately before claiming Universal Credit why should they have to provide a fit note? Perhaps I'm missing something but I thought that the fact that they had been on ESA would be 'transferred' over to Universal Credit without the need for sick notes etc?
Kind regards
Mr B

Hi Mr B
The OP confirmed that they were on IR ESA. The Income Related benefit that goes with NS ESA is Universal Credit.
You could not claim NS ESA without first closing your current ESA claim and would then have to re-meet the Contribution Conditions from scratch.
They would be making a claim on the basis that they are not fit for work so will need to provide a Fit Note from their GP.

That's what I thought. So I was surprised, when my work coach asked for one.

Just to clear this up.
When UC was built there were no electronic connections to any of the benefits that it replaces, such as ESA(IR), so when you make a claim for UC it knows nothing about any ESA award, hence the requirement for the Fit Note, your ESA claim will be manually, yes, I said manually, transferred to UC, quite what they will do when the millions of legacy benefit claimants need to be transferred is anybody's guess.
