Hi,
Can you give me any advice about the ESA benefit please, I am trying to find out if my husband is eligible to claim and which type of ESA would he claim for.
My husband has worked all his life, the last 35 years being self employed, but had to give up work 8 years ago to look after me due to my ill health and became my carer. He receives carers allowance and a top up of income support. My husband has been diagnosed with cancer, he has started treatment, which will include radiotherapy that will start in a few weeks time. My husband will no longer be able to be my carer due to his own ill health, can you tell me if he would be eligible for ESA , I have been trying to find out about ESA but I'm finding it very confusing. Sorry if this post is a little long but we are going through a very stressful time at the moment. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

If he is no longer able to provide the care required to receive Carers Allowance then he will also have to close his Income Support claim, he will also lose the passported benefits that IS provides such as free prescriptions and dental care.

He should be able to claim New Style ESA

He will need to mention his CA claim to the DWP in order to meet the Contribution Conditions but you should first put your information into one of the online benefit calculators as you may receive more making a claim for UC.

Our ESA/UC Claim guide explains the criteria he will need to meet for an award
