Apply for ESA contributions or income? was created by debslosjoe
My husband and I are both on enhanced care and mobility for PIP. I'm also on contributions based ESA but my husband doesn't have the contributions as he has been too I'll to work for years. He was too afraid to attend the ESA assessment 2 years ago so we did without it but now we really need the money. Can he clsim just as himself or do you have to claim as a couple? I have I'll health retirement pensions but no savings. Any advice is appreciated.

Unless you have an existing claim for Housing Benefit in your husband's name and the HB includes the Severe Disability Premium then your husband cannot claim ESA and a claim for Universal Credit would be his only option.

This would be claimed as a couple and your ESA(CB) and pension will be treated as income and deducted from any UC you are entitled to.

Try putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators to see what you might receive.

Thankyou Gordon
It's very confusing to me.
My husband was in ESA but couldn't attend the assessment because of his severe mental health problems. We own our own flat so don't get housing benefit. I will try the calculator thankyou.
