PIP Renewal - not sure what to do?! was created by Jo Rose
I have recieved a letter about renewing my award, I was originally granted the award by tribunal due to suffering anxiety & depression from birth trauma which is due to end in April. Although I've had counselling & I was moving in the right direction my Mum became ill in October with Covid & passed away 14th Dec. She was my main source of help & I have since taken quite a few backwards steps. I still need help most days but I'm not good at communicating my troubles I have developed some self harming issues for which the Drs have perscribed me something to work alongside my depression/anxiety meds. I don't know what to expect when I call them to update my circumstances, I'm petrified they will think I'm a fraud & demand money back. I was supposed to be executor for Mum's will but 1 of my younger sisters stepped in bcoz I couldn't cope. She's willing to speak to the DWP on my behalf like Mum did but I'm scared! I know this is not a judgemental place & Mum encouraged me to join so I thought I havenothing to loose. Any advice/thoughts/comments are welcome.

Hello Jo Rose,

I am really really sorry to hear about your Mum and that you are so worried. I just wish I could give you a big hug.

Every word of your post proves to me at least that you are not a fraud, and for what it is worth, I don’t think you have any reason to be concerned.

The purpose of the renewal processes is to determine what your award should be going forward, not to review whether or not your last reward was correct. We regularly hear of people’s awards being changed at review, but they are not then subject to witch hunts about their previous award. And just to be clear we hear about people being awarded more as well as less.

There are two things which I find encouraging about your post. First, you have your sister who is willing to step into your Mum’s shoes in helping you deal with this process. Say thank you to her, and a big ‘yes please’. I don’t think this a process anyone should have to deal with alone, let alone someone who feels as you do. And obviously your Mum agreed since she was the one who helped you in the first place.

Secondly, you say that your current award was decided at Tribunal. This means you know the process can be drawn out, but it is worth fighting to the end. Let your sister help you, and be proud that have such a great family; part of your Mum’s legacy.

Since you are a member you have full access to our guides. I hope you have shown them to your sister so she can read up on how she can best help you.

I honestly don’t think you have anything to worry about, but I am pleased you have felt able to express your concerns here.

Catherine
