Carer's Element of UC was created by Sophie1985
I currently receive pip standard rate for both mobility and care and i also receive UC limited capability for work and work related activity.

My sister has recently lost her job due to covid and is currently claiming UC while actively looking for work. In the mean time i am wondering if she can claim the Carer's element of UC while looking after me and whether that will effect my own benefits? I was under the impression it only effected people claiming ESA and not UC like myself but i would like to be sure?

Hi Sophie1985

Universal Credit for Carers

If your sister cares for you for at least 35 hours a week or more, and she is eligible for Universal Credit, then she may qualify for extra money called the Carer element. Your sister does not have to be living with you but you must be getting one of the following:

~ Attendance Allowance
~ Constant Attendance Allowance
~ Disability Living Allowance (at either middle or higher rate care component)
~ Personal Independence Payment (at either standard or enhanced rate of the daily living component)

As a carer she would fit into the ‘no work related requirements group’ if:

she has ‘regular and substantial caring responsibilities for a severely disabled person’ or
she has caring responsibilities for one or more ‘severely disabled people’

Your benefits will not be affected by your sister claiming CE
