SICK NOTE / universal credit/ esa was created by richmond
Hi can you please tell me if you think it is okay to have a 6 months sick note when applying for U/C and ESA? my health problems are on going and wont have any change in the future, I am already on standard PIP.
Thank you very much for advice.

Hi sam,

Ultimately it is up to the DWP as to what they will accept, but as far as I can see if your GP deems that you will not be fit for work 6 months, that is hard to challenge. Indeed, in my opinion, if you are submitting evidence to support a Capability for Work form the longer the fit note the better.

Thank you for your fast response, my GP and I have spoken at length regarding my many conditions and at the age of 58 they are not going to really improve just might be stable with medication she would do one year sick note for U/C and ESA if I can apply for both, I have worked and just about to take voluntary redundancy especially due to my health conditions.
Thank you again for help as very stressed here not knowing what to do?

Hi sam

You will not be able to apply for either legacy ESA components (IR or CB)

New Style ESA is a Contribution Based benefit and is not means tested with the exception of pension income which can reduce the amount that you receive.

The Income Related benefit that goes with NS ESA is Universal Credit, you can claim Housing Element with UC providing you meet the criteria.

You can check by putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators.

www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators

www.gov.uk/apply-universal-credit

Even if you can apply for UC you might also want to have a look at whether you can claim New Style ESA.

Thank you Gary for your help, it is all very confusing and thankful for the support especially with my medical conditions also being dyslexic and struggle with forms, is the first step apply U/C, then I can apply for new style ESA? this can be done at the same time as long as I have sick notes for both. if so at least I have a plan in my head which is in a state of stress.
Thank you again.
