Hi, My partner and I live in separate houses but want to move in together. We both have council properties but need our own rooms because of medical needs but obviously don’t want to pay bedroom tax...is there anybody who has knowledge of experience of this?
Hi Howard, Normally a couple is deemed to need one bedroom, however if you both have medical needs then you could certainly argue you need 2 separate rooms. Examples of where 2 rooms would be appropriate is where you need specialised equipment, this could be eg a dialysis machine. If you have a sleep disorder where you would cause too much disturbance to allow your partner to sleep thus might also apply. You could get full advice from eg CAB if required I assume that you are aware that by moving in together this may have an implication for any means benefits either of you may claim. You may need to claim UC. Again, this is something you may wish to discuss with a benefits advisor. I hope this helps.
